Madcap Melange

For this production of The Good Person of Szechuan, I am envisioning a madcap melange of ensemble excellence. The production will use a troupe of 14 actors, at least 2 puppet manipulators, masks and quick costume changes.

We are deliberately mixing and matching from many different styles, time periods and cultures.

It's a crazy mix.

Zany.

Hopefully hilarious.

  1. Lisa, I mounted a production of "Caucasian Chalk Circle" at Lansing Community College that employed the same overall aesthetic you're using, though much less thoroughly researched, and more left up to the actor's creative devices. The word "eclectic" was very hot then in 1984, and I was quick to adopt it. The actors loved the process, creating some exceedingly creative characterizations, costumes, and even their own music, with me acting more as traffic cop than artistic force.

And the results were absolutely delightful, and well received. Brecht seems to benefit from a playful, here-and-now treatment. That your production is also so well thought-out, and its conception so thoroughly rooted in the world of the play, I find very exciting indeed.

I look forward to future posts here throughout rehearsal. As time permits, of course!
